This week we lost an American hero Dr. Sally Ride the first American woman in space. Most of us just know her as Sally Ride, but she earned a PhD in Astrophysics from Stanford University. In addition to her career in NASA and astrophysics, she was a nationally ranked tennis player and was encouraged to turn professional. Fortunately for us she decided to focus her interests in other areas. It is not my intent to write an obituary for Dr Ride, but she was certainly an accomplished individual a great asset for our country. What I would like to write about is that now after her death we find out that she spent the last 27 years in a relationship with a female partner.
It makes me sad that this individual who has contributed so much to our country had to hide from the public eye such an important part of her life. I know that I would have felt diminished if over the years I had to hide the relationship between my wife and I. In today’s world where divorce is so common we should be celebrating their 27year relationship not forcing them to hide it.
Are Dr. Ride’s accomplishments lessened in anyway because she was in a homosexual relationship? Would the institution of marriage be damaged if these two people were allowed to marry? Actually I think it is damaged because they were not allowed to marry. Dr Ride’s service to America is another reason for me to Vote No on the Marriage Amendment.
I do not consider myself an expert on theology, but I try to live my life by the two great commandments given us by Jesus: Love God, and Love thy Neighbor. I will Vote No on the Marriage Amendment because it is one way to Love my Neighbor.
